Cancer cells are able to evade and/or suppress the body's immune system. If the activity of T-cells is slowed down by cancer cells, the immune system no longer receives the signal to fight the cancer cells and it remains inactive. This allows the tumour to continue growing and spreading.

Immunotherapy attempts to support the body's immune system so that the cancer cells can no longer evade the T-cells. The body's immune response to the cancer cells is therefore reactivated.

The biology of tumours and the way the immune system works are complicated subjects. This video clearly explains the immune system's role in fighting cancer and the defensive strategy that cancer cells use to target the immune system. Finally, it answers the question of how immunotherapy is able to mobilise the body's immune system against cancer.
